Artist Statement – Angie Payne
I’m a Chattanooga-based photographer, and storytelling is really at the center of everything I do. I started out shooting film and working in the darkroom, and that’s still a big part of how I see images today. Even though I work digitally now, I still think in terms of light, texture, and feeling first.
I’ve been doing this for over 20 years, photographing everything from weddings and events to more personal portrait work. Over time, I’ve learned how to work with whatever light is there, natural or studio, but I usually lean toward keeping things simple and real.
Right now, I’m finishing my BFA in Digital Photography, and it’s pushed me to slow down and be more intentional with my work. I’m less interested in perfection and more interested in honesty. I want my images to feel like something, like a moment you can step into, not just look at.
At the end of the day, I’m just trying to make photographs that feel real and stay with people.
